Last week Haiti was struck by a devastating earthquake. It is hard to fully comprehend the scope of the destruction. Hundreds of thousands are feared dead, and hundreds of thousands more face the grim prospect of hunger and disease. Today, let us fervently pray for the people of Haiti, that God will give them strength and comfort in their sorrow and through the many challenges that lie ahead.
- Pray for the people of Haiti who have suffered so greatly. Pray that God will comfort those who have lost loved ones, and will give survivors strength and perseverance in the months and years ahead as they seek to rebuild their shattered lives. "Answer me quickly, O Lord; my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me or I will be like those who go down to the pit." (Psalm 143:7
)
- Pray for all relief workers who have come to Haiti from around the world to help those in dire need. Pray that they will be successful in their mission of healing those who have been injured, finding those trapped beneath rubble, and preventing the spread of hunger and disease.
- Pray that people will continue to open their hearts with compassion and donate generously to the charities working to ease the suffering of the people of Haiti. "Feed the hungry and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness!" (Isaiah 58:10
)
- Pray for the Israeli doctors and relief workers who have travelled to Haiti, that God will give them strength, endurance, and wisdom.
- In the midst of this disaster, the magnitude of which is difficult for the human mind to grasp, pray that the suffering people of Haiti—and all of us—will be reminded that God is present with us in good times and bad. "Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there… even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you…” (Psalm 139:7-8
, 12)
