Call to Worship: Matthew 3:1-3 
In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: "A voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.'
Lighting of the Advent Candle: Dirk & Cyndi Smiley
We light the second candle in the Advent wreath today as a sign of hope. We light this candle in the hope of those exiled in Babylon. To them God spoke comforting words of a coming leader who would bring about a peaceable kingdom. We light the candle of hope of John the Baptist. He preached to both affluent leaders and poor outcasts that God's coming messiah would judge people, not by their deeds or their heritage, but rather by their hearts. We light this candle in the hope of the early church. They experienced the Christ first hand and learned that the Christian community and the gospel where for all people, even in their diversity.
